Gummo -1997-

Directed by Harmony Korine. 89 mins.

Worth my time? NO. (Watched on DVD)

A dirty, meandering serving of “white trash porn.” Harmony Korine is clearly less interested in providing insight on his subjects than he is providing the viewer with something weird to gawk at. Where’s the challenge in that? You can turn anything into a freakshow if you approach it with sufficient detachment.

Gummo does for the impoverished Midwest what Napoleon Dynamite did for nerds. The challenge for this kind of filmmaking is to humanize its characters (not necessarily to condone them, mind you), and this film doesn’t even try. If Gus Van Sant were really lazy and directed an episode of Tom Goes To The Mayor, this would be the end result.

(Watched and originally written during Summer 2010 when I was on a real movie bender)
